The Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, (COCES) Unizik was established as the brainchild of the Chike Okoli Foundation in 2007 as an endowment in memory of Chike Edward Okoli (LLB, Exeter) who had passion for Entrepreneurship but died of undetected coronary artery disease on 31st May, 2005, five days after his 25th birthday. The Centre is therefore a mission borne out of a heartfelt vision to re-train, re-equip, and re-direct Nigerians especially the youths towards entrepreneurship and acquisition of managerial skills which is needed in today’s competitive world.
The goal is to inculcate 21st century skills, techniques and competencies in Nigerian youths, harnessing their untapped potentials and reduce unemployment by producing self employable graduates. The vision of the Centre is to provide a skilled based and focused education with problem solving orientation through business incubation and mentorship. Upon graduation, the student is able to produce a business plan and skills, and not only a certificate.
The COCES has recorded a laudable achievement since inception. Apart from the general courses on entrepreneurship offered to all the second and third year undergraduate students irrespective of their discipline and its existing programmes been offered at the Centre (Certificate and Diploma Programmes in Entrepreneurial Studies), The centre is currently working towards upgrading it to the status of an institute to see it house all programmes on Entrepreneurship in the University and other diploma and certificate courses
The centre participates effectively in the National discussion on entrepreneurial education development and is at the fore front as pioneer entrepreneurship centre in Nigerian Universities. To this effect, COCES, Unizik is in the network of education partnership for Africa with Oxford Brookes University and also Pan African University as an Enterprise Development partner for the YouWin Programme and for Grooming Enterprise Leaders GEL.
